Community Managed Savings & Loan Groups

Join us on Thursday July 23rd and Friday July 24th for an online discussion as we attempt to answer the question: Is SPM relevant for community-managed savings and loan methodologies?

Dear all,

This past Monday I spoke with Rewa Misra, of the Coady International Institute at St Francis Xavier University, and Sean Kline, co-founder and Executive Director of Reach Global, about SPM vis-à-vis community-managed savings and loan groups.

I’ve uploaded the best bits of our conversation, roughly covering 5 themes: Goals of community-managed savings and loan programs, assessing the impacts of these programs, their mission and the possible relevancy of SPM, information collection and analysis and potential entry points to SPM for community-managed finance.

I encourage you all to have a listen to the conversations and then post your comments and questions for the group to this space. I've set up discussion threads on each of the five topics to keep our discussions on track, but if you've a burning issue that's not addressed, please feel free to start your own thread.

My apologies in advance for the sometimes imperfect sound quality – The conversation was recorded over Skype!

Looking forward to hearing your input,

Jessie

Assessing the impacts of programs: Mission and the possible relevancy of SPM: Information collection and analysis: Potential entry points to SPM for community-managed finance: Rewa references a study on member-owned, community-managed financial services. more information is available on the Coady website.

Sorry to have missed this discussion. I think there is great opportunity to use povety score-cords with the savings-led groups. I just came back from a base-line assessment in Ethiopia with FARM Africa. We used poverty-score-cards, pointed household surveys on assets and focus groups. Would like to hear other applications with score-cards or combining quantitative and qualitative. best, Nanci
